What You Need to Know About Shower Dimensions

Deciding the size of your shower is one of the most important decisions you will make during your bathroom remodeling project.  In general, the size of your shower will depend on the kind of shower you want for your bathroom: a walk-in shower or a shower and bathtub combo. In this article, Concept Bath Systems, Inc., the leading bathroom design expert in our area, explains what you need to know about both options.

Walk-In Showers

Walk-in showers are typically smaller than shower and bathtub combos. The smallest showers available on the market are usually 32 by 32 inches. This size is only really advisable for bathrooms that are really tiny, since there isn’t much elbow room. We recommend starting with 36 inches by 36 inches with 30 inches of clear space in front of the shower instead. If your bathroom is small, then consider using square-shaped and round-corner shower kits.

You can figure the space available for your shower by using measuring tape. Measure the height of the ceiling. The minimum height is 80 inches except for areas where the occupants cannot walk. You also need to measure the base of the shower unit all the way to the top. Then you need to figure out the depth of the unit by measuring from the back wall to the front of the enclosure and along both side walls. Since it’s incredibly important for the measurements to be accurate and precise, we highly recommend asking a professional bathroom and kitchen design expert like us to do this for you instead.

Shower and Bathtub Combinations

You will need a bit more space than a walk-in shower if you plan on installing a shower and bathtub combo for your bathroom. The standard bathtub dimensions are 32 inches wide and 60 inches long, so most bathroom and shower combos are 60 inches by 36 inches by 72 inches or 60 inches by 30 inches by 72 inches.
