A Comparison Between Prefab and Slab Granite Countertops

One of the biggest factors that will define your kitchen or bathroom remodeling project is the quality of the surfaces. A lot of homeowners tend to go for prefabricated or slab granite countertops, but how exactly are they different from each other? Let’s compare these two options.

Manufacturing

As the name implies, prefabricated or prefab granite is made of pre-cut slabs of natural granite. The slabs are mass produced at a facility and shipped for installation. Slab granite is also made of natural granite, but instead of being mass produced, they are individually cut from a single slab of stone on demand.

Maintenance

Many kitchen remodeling experts recommend these two options because both granite options are very easy to clean. They are both sturdy and their natural texture does a good job of keeping stains from standing out too much. However, both options are often sealed with a scratch-resistant layer to reduce instances of scratching.

Budget

This is where the two options start to differ. Because prefab slabs are immediately ready for shipping, they tend to cost a lot less. Prefabs also require fewer adjustments prior to installation since they are available in standard sizes. Slab granite almost always comes in custom sizes, making them more expensive.

Installation

Because prefab granite slabs have standard sizes, it doesn’t offer much in terms of versatility. Most options will have a “bullnose” edge although other options still exist. Slab granite’s custom nature gives you plenty of options, which is better for custom shower or kitchen sink installations going for a more unique or personal look.
