Do’s and Don’ts of Cleaning Granite Countertops

Cleaning your countertops may seem like a pretty straight-forward task but there are a lot of cleaning products out there that can damage your lovely granite countertops. Most commercial cleaning products are either too harsh or abrasive for use on granite or marble and will actually do more harm than good. In today’s article, kitchen and bathroom design experts Concept Bath Systems shares the proper way to clean and sanitize your granite countertops.

How to Clean Your Granite Countertops

Contrary to popular belief, no fancy cleaners are needed to clean your granite countertops. In fact, you only really need three things that are already in your home: warm water, mild dishwashing liquid and microfiber cloth.

Popular commercial cleaning products such as Windex, Clorox, or Lysol all have either bleach or citrus in them which can be problematic for your granite kitchen countertops since it is a porous material. Some of these products also contain ingredients that can dull the natural shine of your granite so avoid them at all cost.

To clean your granite countertops, simply mix the dishwashing liquid (make sure that it does not contain citrus extracts) and water in a bucket and apply it with the microfiber cloth. As you wipe, make sure that you use a separate piece of cloth to wipe away the excess cleaning solution to ensure that you are not just pushing the dirt and grime around. Wiping down your countertops with a dry cloth is also crucial to make sure that you do not leave any unsightly water stains which can be a pain to deal with.
